Your Guide to Renting a Car in Zagreb City Centre
Our Zagreb Centre office is conveniently located in the heart of Croatia's capital, making it the perfect starting point for exploring Zagreb and the wider continental Croatia region. Zagreb is a city of contrasts — its Austro-Hungarian lower town (Donji Grad) is a grid of elegant 19th-century boulevards, grand museums, and green squares, while the medieval upper town (Gornji Grad) perches on a ridge above, connected by the world's shortest funicular railway.
The city is far more than a stopover destination. Zagreb has excellent restaurants serving both modern Croatian cuisine and traditional dishes like štrukli (cheese pastry), a thriving craft beer and coffee culture, and some of Croatia's most important museums — including the Museum of Broken Relationships, which began as a concept in Zagreb before travelling the world. The Dolač outdoor market above the main square is one of Europe's most colourful morning markets.
With a rental car from our Zagreb Centre office, all of Croatia opens up before you. The A1 motorway south takes you to Plitvice Lakes (2 hours), Split (4 hours), and Dubrovnik (6 hours). Heading east on the A3 motorway leads to Slavonia and its oak forests, while the A2 north reaches Slovenia and Austria. For day trips, the baroque city of Varaždin (80 km), the castle town of Samobor (25 km), and the Zagorje castles are all easily reachable.
Nearby Attractions
Zagreb Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
The medieval heart of Zagreb: St. Mark's Church with its colourful tiled roof, the Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) with its miraculous image of the Virgin, Lotrščak Tower (noon cannon), and the Croatian Parliament.
Museum of Broken Relationships
A unique and deeply moving museum in Gornji Grad housing donated objects from failed relationships worldwide, each with a personal story. Winner of the Kenneth Hudson Award for Europe's most innovative museum.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia's greatest natural wonder: 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls and cascades, surrounded by ancient forest. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute must-see. A perfect day trip by car from Zagreb.
Samobor
A charming small town at the foot of the Samobor Hills, famous for its kremšnita cream cake, medieval castle ruins, and as a gateway to Žumberak Nature Park hiking trails.
Driving Tips
Zagreb's city centre has a well-developed one-way street system — plan your route before setting off. The main ring road (Slavonska avenija) is the fastest way around the city. For the motorway, follow signs for "A1 Karlovac/Split" (south) or "A2 Ljubljana" (northwest). Paid parking zones cover most of the centre (Zones 1–3, colour-coded red/yellow/green). The most convenient paid garage for the city centre is the Importanne Centre underground garage on Juraj Frankopan Street. Traffic is worst weekdays 7:30–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:30 PM.
Our Zagreb office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Gornji Grad, Donji Grad, Maksimir, Trnje, Trešnjevka, Črnomerec, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
