No Deposit Car Rental at ZAG (Zagreb Airport)
At ZAG, most major rental companies pre-authorize €750–€2,500 on a credit card as a security deposit at pickup. Avax does not. With our Premium insurance package, you pay zero deposit at the counter — no hold, no blocked funds. The price you see at booking is the price you pay; nothing extra is reserved on your card.
Premium insurance is available on every car category at this airport. It includes zero excess (zero deposit), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection, Super CDW, third-party liability, and 24/7 roadside assistance — Croatia’s most comprehensive coverage.
No credit card? You can still rent at ZAG. Mini, Economy, and Intermediate categories accept a debit card with a one-time €60 no-credit-card fee. Bring your driving licence and a passport or national ID. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup is included on every booking.

Your Guide to Renting a Car at Zagreb Airport (ZAG / Franjo Tuđman)
Written by Ante, Avax Rent a Car
Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG) is Croatia's largest and busiest airport, serving the capital city of Zagreb. The modern terminal, which opened in 2017, handles over four million passengers in peak years with direct connections across Europe, the Middle East, and seasonal routes to North America. It is located approximately 17 km southeast of Zagreb city centre in the Velika Gorica area.
The terminal is spacious and well-organised with arrivals on the ground floor. Our Avax Meet & Greet officer contacts you via WhatsApp once you land and meets you directly inside the terminal — no off-site shuttle, no separate rental desk hunt. From the airport, Zagreb's main square (Ban Jelačić Square) is a 20-minute drive via the D30 road or the A11 motorway.
Zagreb Airport is the single best starting point for continental Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Bosnia. The A1 motorway runs south to Plitvice Lakes (1h 30 min), Zadar (3 h), Split (4h 20 min), and Dubrovnik (6h 30 min). The A2 and A3 network connects Ljubljana (2 h), Graz (2h 30 min), Budapest (3h 40 min), and the Slavonia wine region to the east. Same-day cross-border trips to Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary are routine.
Best Alternative to Taxi, Uber & Bolt at Zagreb Airport
Unlike Dubrovnik, Zagreb is well-covered by both Uber and Bolt — a one-off ride to the city is cheap (€15–22). But the economics flip the moment you plan any day trip: Plitvice, Samobor, Trakošćan, Krapina, or a cross-border run to Ljubljana or Budapest. A 3-day Avax rental with unlimited kilometres, full insurance, and free cross-border paperwork typically costs less than two organised tours — and the car is yours for the whole stay. Zagreb's hinterland rewards the self-drive traveller more than the ride-share passenger.
Winter Driving from ZAG — What Makes Us Different
Zagreb sits in continental Croatia where snow, fog, and sub-zero temperatures are common from November through March. Winter tyres are legally mandatory on motorway routes inland (A1 to Plitvice/Split, A3 east, A2 north) from 15 November to 15 April when signs are posted. Every Avax ZAG rental includes compliant winter tyres and an emergency kit at no extra charge during that window — competitors commonly add €5–10 per day for the same equipment. If you're driving to Plitvice in January or crossing to Ljubljana in a snowstorm, this matters.
Nearby Attractions
Zagreb Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
The historic heart of Zagreb featuring St. Mark's Church with its colourful tiled roof, the Stone Gate, Lotrščak Tower (which fires a cannon daily at noon), the Croatian Parliament, and the Museum of Broken Relationships.
Sljeme / Mt Medvednica Gondola
A 4 km gondola opened 2022 climbs from Zagreb to the 1,035 m summit of Sljeme — fantastic hiking in summer, ski lifts and medieval Medvedgrad fortress year-round. Parking at Dolje base station.
Samobor
A charming small town at the foot of the Samobor Hills, famous for kremšnita cream cake, medieval castle ruins, and hiking in Žumberak Nature Park. A classic half-day trip for anyone flying in for a long weekend.
Krapina Neanderthal Museum
One of the world's best Neanderthal museums, built into the hillside where 80+ Neanderthal skeletons were found in 1899. Brilliant for families and history buffs. Combine with a stop at Kumrovec ethno-village (birthplace of Tito) on the same loop.
Trakošćan Castle
Croatia's most photogenic fairytale castle — a 13th-century hilltop fortress rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, complete with a moat-lake and forested grounds. Arguably the best interior-visit castle in the country.
Varaždin
The baroque capital of Croatia, featuring a beautifully preserved Old Town fortress, elegant 18th-century palaces, and the Špancirfest street festival every August. A full-day trip, often combined with Trakošćan.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia's most famous national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — 16 terraced turquoise lakes and 92 waterfalls in a dense beech-and-fir forest. 1h 30 min south on the A1 motorway.
Ljubljana (Slovenia)
A 2-hour drive via the A2 and the Bregana border crossing. Slovenia's capital is compact, walkable, and beautiful — a great cross-border day trip or overnight detour. Cross-border is free for 3+ day rentals.
Driving Tips
Zagreb has a well-connected motorway network. The A1 heads south to Plitvice, Split, and Dubrovnik; the A3 runs east-west connecting to Slovenia and Serbia; the A2 leads north to the Slovenian border. All Croatian motorways use a closed-ticket toll system: take a ticket at entry, pay at the exit booth by credit/debit card or cash (EUR). Zagreb's paid parking zones are colour-coded: Zone 1 (red, ~€2/h, 2h max), Zone 2 (yellow), Zone 3 (green), and Zone 4 (weekdays only). Pay via the mParking SMS system, ticket machines, or the AZM app. For Old Town visits, park at Importanne Centar or Kaptol Centar garages rather than trying to find street parking. Winter tyres are legally required 15 Nov – 15 Apr on motorway routes inland — all our rentals include them.
Our Zagreb office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Gornji Grad, Donji Grad, Maksimir, Trnje, Trešnjevka, Črnomerec, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
