Rent a Car at Zagreb Airport (ZAG) – Our Own Office · Free Transfer Both Ways

Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG) is Croatia's largest airport and the gateway to continental Croatia, Slovenia and the northern half of the A1 motorway. Avax does not rent from a concession desk inside the terminal. We run our own office near the airport, in Velika Kosnica — staffed by our own team, with our own fleet parked outside — and we drive you between the terminal and that office in both directions, free.

How pickup works

You walk out of baggage claim into the Arrivals hall, where our officer is waiting with an AVAX sign. We drive you to the office in an Avax car: a private transfer, not a shared shuttle you queue for and not a remote depot you have to find. The contract is signed in the office and your car is parked outside it. We track your flight number, so a delayed landing costs you nothing and never forfeits the booking.

How the return works

The return is the same journey in reverse, and it is the part travellers usually have to solve themselves elsewhere. You drive to our office, we check the car in, and our officer drives you to the departures door — included on every ZAG rental. No bus timetable to make on your last morning, no taxi fare, no walking a suitcase down a service road. Allow around 30 minutes for the check and the ride. If you arrive early, park with us for free and wait in the office.

Why not the in-terminal counters

Desks inside the ZAG terminal carry an airport concession surcharge that is built into the daily rate, and in July and August they queue 30–45 minutes deep behind two staffed positions. Renting from our own office removes both the surcharge and the queue, and you give up nothing for it: you are still met at arrivals, still driven both ways at no charge, still dealing with the same team for the whole rental rather than a franchise counter.

Where you can go from ZAG

Zagreb Airport is the best starting point in Croatia for a one-way drive south. The A1 runs to Plitvice Lakes in about 1 h 40 min, Zadar in 2 h 30 min, Split in about 4 h 20 min and Dubrovnik in about 6 h 30 min — and you can leave the car at any Avax office along that route for a one-way fee shown before you pay. Heading the other way, the Bregana border crossing into Slovenia is about 30 minutes away, Ljubljana about an hour and Lake Bled about 90 minutes; cross-border travel is free on rentals of three days or more and the Green Card is in the glovebox at pickup. Zagreb city centre is 17 km, about 20 minutes on the D30 or the A11.

Winter driving

Continental Croatia requires winter equipment by law from 15 November to 15 April, and every car leaving our Zagreb Airport office in that window is fitted with compliant tyres at no extra cost. It is the item most often missing from a cheap headline price at ZAG — competitors commonly bill €5–€10 a day for it.
