Everything you need to know about renting a car in Croatia with Avax Rent a Car.
Booking & Reservations
Can I rent a car without a credit card?
Yes! Avax Rent a Car offers the option to rent without a credit card. You can use a debit card or pay in cash at selected locations. A security deposit may be required depending on the vehicle category and payment method.
Is a deposit required?
A security deposit is pre-authorized on your payment card at pickup. The amount depends on the vehicle category and insurance package chosen. The deposit is fully released upon vehicle return if there are no damages or violations.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation is available up to 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Cancellations made within 48 hours may be subject to a cancellation fee. No-shows are charged the full rental amount. Check your booking confirmation for specific terms.
Can I modify my reservation after booking?
Yes, you can modify your reservation through the "Manage Booking" section on our website. Changes to dates, locations, or vehicle category are subject to availability and may affect the price.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance, especially during peak summer season (June-September). Early booking often secures better prices and wider vehicle selection. You can also set up price alerts to be notified when rates drop.
Documents & Requirements
What documents do I need to rent a car?
You need: (1) A valid driving license held for at least 1 year, (2) A valid ID card or passport, (3) A payment card (credit or debit) in the driver's name. EU driving licenses are accepted directly. Non-EU licenses may require an International Driving Permit (IDP).
What is the minimum age to rent?
The minimum age to rent is 21 years. Drivers aged 21-24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge depending on the vehicle category. There is no maximum age limit, but all drivers must hold a valid license.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
EU/EEA driving licenses are accepted without an IDP. For licenses issued outside the EU (e.g., USA, UK, Canada, Australia), an IDP is strongly recommended alongside your national license. Licenses in non-Latin script (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Japanese) require an IDP.
Can someone else drive the rental car?
Yes, additional drivers can be added to your rental agreement. Each additional driver must meet the same age and license requirements and must be present at pickup with their documents. An additional driver fee applies.
Insurance & Protection
What insurance options are available?
We offer several insurance packages: (1) Basic - included in every rental with CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and TP (Theft Protection) with excess, (2) Medium - reduced excess amount, (3) Full Coverage - zero excess with comprehensive protection including tires, glass, and undercarriage. You can select your preferred package during booking.
What happens if the car is damaged?
If the vehicle is damaged during your rental, you should: (1) Report it immediately by calling our 24/7 support line, (2) File a police report if another vehicle is involved, (3) Complete an accident report form at the rental station. Your financial liability depends on the insurance package chosen - with Full Coverage, you pay nothing.
Is roadside assistance included?
Yes, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every rental at no extra charge. In case of a breakdown, flat tire, or any mechanical issue, call our support number provided in your rental documents and we will arrange assistance.
During the Rental
What is the fuel policy?
We operate a "full-to-full" fuel policy. You receive the car with a full tank and should return it with a full tank. If the car is returned with less fuel, a refueling charge will be applied based on the missing fuel plus a service fee.
Is cross-border travel allowed?
Cross-border travel is allowed to most EU countries including Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Italy, Austria, and others. You must inform us in advance and a cross-border fee may apply. Travel to some non-EU countries may require special permission.
What do I do if I get a traffic fine?
Traffic fines are the renter's responsibility. If a fine is issued during your rental period, it will be forwarded to you along with an administrative fee. We recommend paying tolls through the ENC system or at toll booths to avoid additional charges.
Can I return the car to a different location?
Yes, one-way rentals are available between most of our locations in Croatia. A one-way fee applies and varies depending on the pickup and return locations. You can see the one-way fee during the booking process.
Pickup & Return
Where can I pick up my rental car?
We have rental stations at major airports (Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Zadar) and city locations across Croatia. You can also arrange Meet & Greet delivery to your hotel or any address for added convenience.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
We monitor flight arrivals at all airport locations. If your flight is delayed, we will adjust your pickup time accordingly at no extra charge. Please provide your flight number when booking so we can track your arrival.
