Split Airport (SPU), in the town of Resnik between Split and Trogir, is the second-busiest airport in Croatia and the primary summer hub for central and southern Dalmatia. With direct connections from over 60 European cities in peak season, it handles 3+ million passengers annually.
The terminal has a straightforward single-building layout. Our Avax representative meets you near the car rental area inside arrivals and drives you to our nearby office — a 2-minute ride from the terminal. From the airport: Trogir is 8 km west (12 min), Split city centre and the ferry port 25 km east (30 min). Both are easy via the D8 coast or the A1 motorway.
Split Airport is the best-positioned base in Croatia for a multi-country, multi-island road trip. Inside 2 hours you can be at Krka Waterfalls (1h 15 min), the Biokovo Skywalk (1h 10 min), or Mostar in Bosnia (2h 30 min cross-border). Since the Pelješac Bridge opened in July 2022, you can even drive to Dubrovnik (220 km / 2h 40 min) entirely inside Croatia — no border queue at Neum.

Trogir Old Town (UNESCO)
A UNESCO-listed medieval island town 8 km west of SPU, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its Radovan portal is one of Central Europe's finest Romanesque works. Tiny pedestrian streets, excellent seafood — a 5-minute detour from the airport.
Kaštela Riviera
Seven historic castle-towns strung along the coast between Split and Trogir. Kaštel Lukšić and Kaštel Stari are the pick — castle ruins right on the water and quiet local beaches. 10 km from SPU, a great sunset stop.
Klis Fortress (Game of Thrones)
A dramatic medieval hilltop fortress famous as the city of Meereen in GoT. 20 km / 25 min from SPU, with sweeping views from the Dinaric Alps to the sea. Entry €8, parking free at the base.
Diocletian's Palace, Split (UNESCO)
A 1,700-year-old Roman palace continuously inhabited ever since. The basement was Daenerys's throne room in GoT. 25 km east of SPU, best visited early morning or after 17:00 to skip cruise-ship crowds.
Split Ferry Port (islands gateway)
Daily car ferries to Brač (50 min), Hvar (2 h), Korčula (2h 45 min), Šolta, and Vis. 25 km from SPU. Every Avax car is ferry-ready. Book car slots 5–10 days ahead in July/August.
Cetina River Canyon (Omiš)
A dramatic river canyon offering white-water rafting, zip-lining, and rock climbing. Drive the scenic canyon road from Omiš to the Zadvarje waterfall — one of Croatia's best coastal drives. 35 km from SPU.
Makarska Riviera & Biokovo Skywalk
60 km stretch of coast backed by the 1,762 m Biokovo mountain. Brela and Baška Voda have Croatia's best pebble beaches. The Biokovo Skywalk glass platform at 1,228 m is a 1h 10 min drive from SPU.
Krka National Park
Travertine waterfalls centred on Skradinski Buk, plus the Visovac Island monastery. 1h 15 min north on the A1 (exit Skradin). Park the car in Skradin and take the included shuttle boat up to the falls.
Driving Tips
The D8 coastal road between Split and Trogir passes right by SPU and is heavily trafficked in summer (10:00–13:00 and 17:00–20:00). For Split city centre, faster to take the A1 motorway via the Dugopolje interchange. Toll payments: card or cash (EUR) at exit booths, keep the entry ticket. In Split, use the Sukoišan lot near the ferry port (€1.50/h, €12/day) or the Znjan beach parking — avoid trying to park near Diocletian's Palace. Heading south to Makarska or Dubrovnik in peak summer, leave by 09:00 to avoid the coastal-road bottleneck at Omiš. Cross-border to Bosnia: keep your passport ready at Doljani or Kamensko crossings.
