Your Guide to Renting a Car in Split City Centre (Riva / Diocletian's Palace)
Written by Vedran, Avax Rent a Car
Our Split Downtown office is located at Obala Lazareta 3, right along the waterfront promenade (Riva) just steps from Diocletian's Palace — the 1,700-year-old Roman palace that is the beating heart of Split and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The office is a 2-minute walk from the main Ferry Terminal (Trajektna luka), within easy reach of the bus and train stations, and surrounded by central hotels, restaurants, and apartments.
Split is Croatia's second-largest city and the undisputed capital of Dalmatia. It has grown around and within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, a Roman emperor's retirement home built in the 4th century that remains one of the best-preserved Roman structures anywhere in the world. The palace basement, the Peristyle courtyard, and the Cathedral of St. Domnius (converted from Diocletian's mausoleum) are extraordinary. Beyond the palace, the Riva promenade, Marjan Hill's forest park, and the Varoš old neighbourhood reward explorers.
Our office sits right next to Trajektna luka — ideal for travellers arriving by ferry from the islands of Brač, Hvar, Šolta, Vis, or Korčula. Step off the boat, pick up your car, and head straight inland or along the coast. If you're staying centrally, we also deliver vehicles directly to hotels and apartments (fee €25–35 depending on address).
A Split Downtown rental unlocks the entire Dalmatian coast: Omiš / Cetina canyon (30 min), Makarska Riviera and the Biokovo Skywalk (1h 15 min), Krka National Park and Šibenik (1h 15 min north), Mostar in Bosnia (2h 30 min cross-border), and Dubrovnik (2h 45 min via the new Pelješac Bridge — no border crossing). Drop-offs at Split Airport (25 km), Dubrovnik Downtown, Zadar, or Zagreb are all supported.
Best Alternative to Taxi & Uber in Split
Uber operates in limited areas around Split and is unreliable for airport and ferry-port runs, and airport taxis routinely cost €40–60 each way. For any stay that includes Krka, Mostar, Biokovo, the islands (via ferry), or a one-way to Dubrovnik, a 3-day Avax rental with unlimited kilometres and full insurance is dramatically cheaper than stringing together ride-shares and day tours — and the car is yours for the whole trip. Cross-border to Bosnia and Montenegro is free for 3+ day rentals.
Game of Thrones Locations Reachable from the Office
Split is one of the world's densest Game of Thrones filming hubs. Diocletian's Palace basement (Daenerys's throne room) is a 3-minute walk. By car you can reach Klis Fortress (Meereen, 20 min), Žrnovnica (Meereen slave market scenes, 15 min), Baška Voda (Dance of Dragons, 1 h), and further afield Trsteno Arboretum and Dubrovnik Old Town (King's Landing, 2h 45 min). Our staff will hand you a printed GoT driving map at pickup on request.
Nearby Attractions
Diocletian's Palace (UNESCO)
The beating heart of Split: a 1,700-year-old Roman palace continuously inhabited ever since. Explore the underground cellars, the Peristyle square, the Temple of Jupiter, and dozens of restaurants and shops within its ancient walls. Daenerys's throne room in Game of Thrones is here.
Marjan Hill
A forested peninsula on the western edge of Split, perfect for hiking, cycling, and swimming. Climb to the Vidilica viewpoint for a panoramic view of Split, the islands, and the Dinaric Alps, or visit the small 15th-century chapels nestled in the forest.
Klis Fortress (Game of Thrones)
A dramatic medieval hilltop fortress above Split, famous as the city of Meereen in GoT. The fortress offers sweeping views from the Dinaric Alps to the sea. Entry €8, parking free at the base.
Salona — Roman capital of Dalmatia
The ancient Roman capital of Dalmatia, birthplace of Emperor Diocletian, just outside modern Solin. A large open-air archaeological park with amphitheatre, basilica ruins, and the Manastirine cemetery. Often overlooked by tourists — a brilliant 2-hour add-on.
Trogir Old Town (UNESCO)
A UNESCO-listed medieval island town connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its Radovan portal is one of Central Europe's finest Romanesque works. Tiny pedestrian streets and excellent seafood restaurants.
Cetina River Canyon (Omiš)
A dramatic river canyon offering white-water rafting, zip-lining over the gorge, and rock climbing on the cliffs of Omiš. The canyon drive from Omiš inland to the Zadvarje waterfall is one of Croatia's most scenic routes.
Makarska Riviera & Biokovo Skywalk
A 60 km stretch of coast backed by the 1,762 m Biokovo mountain. Brela and Baška Voda have some of Croatia's best pebble beaches. The Biokovo Skywalk glass platform at 1,228 m is a 1h 15 min drive and one of the country's best viewpoints.
Krka National Park
A UNESCO-adjacent park with the Skradinski Buk travertine waterfall complex and the Visovac Island monastery. 1h 15 min north on the A1. Park the car in Skradin and take the included shuttle boat up to the falls.
Driving Tips
Split city centre has limited and expensive parking. Best options near our office: the Sukoišan open-air lot east of the ferry port (€1.50/hour, €12/day) and the Znjan beach parking area (further but cheap and bus-connected). For Marjan Hill, park at the Sustipan parking area at the base. When leaving Split for the A1 motorway, follow signs for 'A1 Dugopolje' — the Solin interchange. Avoid driving through the Varoš neighbourhood (streets are too narrow for cars) and the pedestrian-only Diocletian's Palace core. Summer traffic on the D8 coastal road (towards Makarska) can be gridlocked 10:00–13:00 — leave early or late. Street parking uses the mParking SMS system: send the registration plate to the zone's number.
Our Split office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Bačvice, Meje, Gripe, Spinut, Žnjan, Mejaši, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
