Your Guide to Renting a Car in Dubrovnik City Centre (Lapad)
Written by Bojan, Avax Rent a Car
Our Dubrovnik Downtown office is in the Lapad neighbourhood, close to the main hotel zone and Gruž Ferry Port — the most convenient pickup location in Dubrovnik for anyone not arriving by plane. The Old Town bans all car traffic inside its walls, so a Lapad-based pickup avoids the Special Traffic Regime fines that catch out travellers aiming for Pile Gate. From our office, the Old Town is 5 minutes by car, Gruž ferry port is 3 minutes away, and the airport is a 30-minute drive south.
Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", is one of the most iconic destinations in the Mediterranean. The Old Town, encircled by massive 13th-century stone walls and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, doubled as King's Landing in Game of Thrones. The Stradun, the main limestone-paved street, is the social heart of the city. Walk the 1,940 m wall circuit (€35 entry) and ride the Srđ cable car for two of Croatia's best photo moments.
A rental car from our Lapad office unlocks the broader region: Cavtat (17 km south, quieter beach base), Trsteno Arboretum (18 km north, GoT filming), Ston (55 km north, oysters + longest defensive walls after the Great Wall of China), the Pelješac wine region (Dingač, Postup), Mljet National Park (via Prapratno ferry), Korčula Town (130 km, "Little Dubrovnik"), and cross-border to Kotor / Bay of Kotor (92 km / 1h 30 min — UNESCO, FREE cross-border for 3+ day rentals) or Mostar (140 km / 2h 15 min).
Best Alternative to Taxi & Uber in Dubrovnik
Uber has very limited coverage in Dubrovnik and is effectively unusable for day trips. Taxis cost €35–50 one-way to the airport; pre-booked transfers to Cavtat, Ston, Kotor, or Mostar run €80–220 each direction. For any stay that includes more than one day trip, a 3-day Avax rental with unlimited kilometres, full insurance, and free cross-border paperwork is dramatically cheaper than stringing together ride-shares and tour tickets. No surge pricing, no shuttle schedules, no permit-hunting for Old Town approaches.
Dubrovnik Special Traffic Regime — Avoid the €260 Fine
From May to October Dubrovnik enforces a Special Traffic Regime near the Old Town. Driving into restricted streets (Brsalje, Frana Supila, anything inside Pile Gate) without a permit triggers an automatic €260 fine — and yes, it's forwarded to rental-car drivers. Our Lapad office is in the safe zone. At pickup, our staff hands you a printed map of restricted streets and the two best parking garages (Ilija, Gruž) outside the enforcement area.
Nearby Attractions
Dubrovnik Old Town & City Walls (UNESCO)
Walk the 1,940 m circuit of the medieval city walls (up to 25 m high) for breathtaking panoramic views. The Stradun, Rector's Palace, Franciscan Monastery, and Onofrio's Fountain are essentials. Entry to the walls is €35 in peak season — go early or late to skip cruise-ship crowds.
Srđ Cable Car & Imperial Fortress
A 4-minute cable car from Ploče up to the 412 m summit of Mount Srđ for the single best panorama of Dubrovnik, Lokrum, and the Elafiti. The Imperial Fortress at the top houses the Homeland War Museum. 2 km from our office.
Gruž Ferry Port (Elafiti & Korčula)
Daily passenger ferries to the Elafiti Islands (Koločep, Lopud, Šipan — sandy beaches, no cars, peaceful), plus international ferry connections to Bari and car ferries to Korčula. 3 km from our Lapad office, 8 minutes by car.
Lokrum Island
A lush, car-free island 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Port. Botanical garden, Benedictine monastery, the Dead Sea saltwater lake, and free-roaming peacocks. A perfect half-day escape. Boats leave every 30 minutes in season.
Cavtat
A charming harbour town 17 km south — quieter than Dubrovnik in July/August with its own sandy-pebble beaches, the Vlaho Bukovac Gallery, and excellent seafood. A regular water-taxi runs to Dubrovnik Old Town (45 min, €15). Many travellers sleep here.
Trsteno Arboretum
A 15th-century Renaissance garden on the coast — the oldest arboretum in the region. Baroque fountain, ancient oriental plane trees, and King's Landing palace garden scenes from Game of Thrones. 18 km / 25 min north.
Ston — salt pans & oyster farms
A small fortified town on the Pelješac Peninsula with Europe's longest defensive walls after the Great Wall of China, active salt pans dating to 1333, and the most famous oyster beds in the Adriatic. Book a tasting at Mali Ston. 55 km / 50 min.
Bay of Kotor, Montenegro (UNESCO)
Southern Europe's deepest fjord-like bay, dotted with medieval walled towns — Kotor, Perast, Herceg Novi. 92 km / 1h 30 min cross-border. FREE with 3+ day Avax rentals — select "Cross Border" in Step 4 of booking. Bring your passport.
Driving Tips
Dubrovnik's Old Town is completely pedestrianised — do not try to drive into Pile Gate or Ploče during summer (€260 fine on camera-enforced streets). Park at the Ilija garage (above the Old Town, connected by escalator to Banje beach) or the underground garage at Gruž port. Street parking in Lapad is easier but fills up in July/August. When driving south towards Cavtat or Montenegro on the D8, be prepared for narrow sections and sharp turns along the beautiful shoreline — take it slow, especially at night. Heading north: the Pelješac Bridge (opened 2022) is toll-free and lets you skip the Bosnian border at Neum. Cross-border to Kotor: Debeli Brijeg border crossing, allow 20–40 min queue in peak season.
Our Dubrovnik office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Lapad, Gruž, Pile, Ploče, Babin Kuk, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
