Your Guide to Renting a Car at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV)
Written by Bojan, Avax Rent a Car
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), also known as Čilipi Airport, is the main gateway to southern Dalmatia and one of Croatia's busiest airports during the summer season. Located approximately 22 km southeast of Dubrovnik's Old Town near the village of Čilipi, the airport handles over three million passengers in peak years with direct flights from major European cities and seasonal routes from North America.
The airport has a single modern terminal with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the upper level. Car rental desks and meet-and-greet points are located just outside the arrivals hall. After collecting your vehicle, you can reach Dubrovnik's Old Town in about 25–30 minutes via the D8 coastal road, which offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the Elafiti Islands.
Heading north from the airport, the scenic coastal highway connects you to Cavtat in just 5 minutes, or you can drive to Montenegro — the Debeli Brijeg border crossing is only 30 minutes away. If you plan to visit the Pelješac Peninsula and its famous vineyards, or continue north all the way to Split, take the 2.4 km Pelješac Bridge (opened July 2022, toll-free) which bypasses the short stretch of Bosnian territory at Neum. This one bridge has transformed Dubrovnik-to-Split road travel — no passports, no border queues, no Green Card paperwork.
Best Alternative to Taxi & Uber at Dubrovnik Airport
Uber does not operate at Dubrovnik Airport and has very limited coverage in the city, often with long wait times and summer surge pricing. A standard airport taxi to the Old Town costs 35–50 EUR one way, and pre-booked private transfers to Cavtat, Ston, Kotor, or Mostar run 80–220 EUR each direction. Renting a car with Avax inside the arrivals hall turns a single transfer fare into days of freedom. On a 3-day rental you get unlimited kilometres, full insurance, and free cross-border travel to Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro — for a total price often less than two one-way taxi rides. No shuttle, no surge pricing, no schedule dependency.
Three Countries, One Rental — The Dubrovnik Airport Advantage
No other Croatian airport sits within 2 hours of three countries. From DBV you can be in Bosnia & Herzegovina at Neum (40 min) or Mostar (2h 30 min), in Montenegro at Kotor (1h 40 min) or Budva (2h), and of course anywhere in southern Croatia — Pelješac wine region (1h), Mljet National Park (1h 30 min + ferry), Korčula (2h 20 min). A 5–7 day rental from DBV routinely covers three countries, four UNESCO sites, and two ferry islands without repositioning.
Nearby Attractions
Cavtat (5 km)
A charming harbour town on the Rat Peninsula with a beautiful waterfront promenade, the Vlaho Bukovac Gallery, and excellent seafood restaurants. A perfect first stop after landing and a quieter base than the Old Town in July–August.
Konavle Valley
A lush green valley stretching from the airport to the Montenegro border, known for traditional silk embroidery, family wine cellars, horseback riding, and the Sokol Grad medieval fortress.
Dubrovnik Old Town (UNESCO)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval stone walls, the Stradun promenade, and baroque architecture. Walk the full 1,940 m circuit of the city walls for unforgettable views. Avoid cruise-ship peak hours (10:00–13:00) for the best experience.
Srđ Cable Car & Imperial Fortress
A 4-minute cable car from Ploče to the summit of Mount Srđ at 412 m — the single best panorama over Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island, and the Elafiti. The Imperial Fortress at the top also houses the Homeland War Museum.
Trsteno Arboretum
A 15th-century Renaissance garden on the coast north of Dubrovnik — the oldest arboretum in the region, featuring a baroque fountain and a grove of ancient oriental planes. Famous as a Game of Thrones filming location (King's Landing palace gardens).
Ston — salt pans & oyster farms
A small fortified town on the Pelješac Peninsula, home to Europe's longest defensive walls after the Great Wall of China, active salt pans dating to 1333, and the most famous oyster beds in the Adriatic. Book a tasting at Mali Ston.
Bay of Kotor, Montenegro (UNESCO)
Southern Europe's deepest fjord-like bay surrounded by dramatic mountains and dotted with medieval walled towns — Kotor, Perast, Herceg Novi. Cross-border travel is free with Avax for 3+ day rentals. Bring your passport.
Mljet National Park
An entire island that is largely a national park — two saltwater lakes, St. Mary's Islet monastery, cycling trails, and some of the clearest swimming water in Croatia. Reach via Prapratno ferry (75 km / 1h 15 min to the ferry, 45 min crossing).
Driving Tips
The D8 coastal road between the airport and Dubrovnik Old Town can be congested during peak summer months (July–August), especially 10:00–13:00 when cruise ships disembark. Consider travelling early morning or late afternoon. Dubrovnik enforces a Special Traffic Regime May–October — driving into a restricted zone near Pile Gate without a permit triggers an automatic €260 fine; our team gives you a printed map of restricted streets at pickup. For parking, use the Ilija garage above the Old Town or the underground garage at Gruž port — both safely outside the fine zone. Tolls only apply if you drive north past the Pelješac Bridge onto the A1 motorway; pay at booths with card (EUR) or cash.
Our Dubrovnik office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Lapad, Gruž, Pile, Ploče, Babin Kuk, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
