Your Guide to Renting a Car at Korčula City Port
Korčula Town is one of the crown jewels of the Adriatic — a perfectly preserved medieval walled city rising from a small peninsula on the northern coast of Korčula island, often referred to as "Little Dubrovnik" for its remarkable similarity to its more famous neighbour. The town's distinctive herringbone street layout was designed by medieval architects to channel the cooling maestral wind through the upper streets while blocking the cold bura in the lower lanes.
The town harbour (Gradska Luka) handles passenger ferries connecting Korčula to Split, Dubrovnik, and the island of Hvar, as well as local services to the Pelješac Peninsula. Our Avax meet-and-greet service at Korčula City Port allows guests arriving by ferry or staying in the Old Town area to collect their vehicle directly at the harbour, without travelling to the Dominče car ferry port 3 km away.
Note that while Korčula Old Town itself is best explored on foot, a rental car is invaluable for accessing the rest of the island — the vineyards around Lumbarda (6 km), the prehistoric Vela Spila cave above Vela Luka (35 km), the quiet coves along the south coast, and the panoramic viewpoint of Sveti Ilija hill (28 km). The island has excellent Pošip and Grk white wines waiting to be discovered at family wineries throughout the interior.
Nearby Attractions
Korčula Old Town
A stunning medieval fortified city on a small peninsula, featuring the Cathedral of St. Mark, the Treasury of the Cathedral, the Town Museum, and the Marco Polo House (the alleged birthplace of the great explorer). The Moreška sword dance is performed on selected evenings in summer.
Marco Polo House
The house claimed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, the 13th-century Venetian explorer. The tower can be climbed for panoramic views over the old town rooftops and the Pelješac channel.
Lumbarda
A small village and wine region 6 km southeast of Korčula Town, home to the indigenous Grk white grape. The sandy beach at Prižba and the wine cellars around the village are the main draws.
Orebić (by passenger ferry)
The main town on the Pelješac Peninsula, reachable by passenger ferry from Korčula Town in 15 minutes. Gateway to the Pelješac wine region (Dingač and Postup red wines) and the town of Ston.
Driving Tips
Note that Korčula Old Town itself is pedestrianised — there is no parking inside the walls. Use the large car park outside the Land Gate (Kopnena vrata) or the parking area near the harbour. For exploring the rest of the island, the DC116 main road is well-signposted from the town outskirts. Fuel is available at the station on the road towards Žrnovo, about 2 km east of the Old Town. The passenger ferry to Orebić departs from the town quay near the Land Gate.
