Frequently Asked Questions About Car Rental in Zagreb Downtown
Where is the Avax Zagreb Downtown office?
We are at Ulica Kralja Zvonimira 37, in the eastern city centre near Kvaternikov Trg (Kvatrić). Open 08:00–20:00 daily, staff always on-site — no appointment needed. 15-minute walk from Glavni Kolodvor (main train station) or 5 minutes on Tram 9 or 17.
How do I get from the train station to the office?
Zagreb Main Train Station (Glavni Kolodvor) is a straight 15-minute walk east, or a 5-minute ride on Tram 9 or 17. From the main bus station (Autobusni Kolodvor) it's a 10-minute walk. No taxi needed.
Are Uber and Bolt useful in Zagreb, or should I just rent a car?
Both Uber and Bolt work well in Zagreb with competitive short-hop fares — fine for a quick airport transfer or ride across town. But for any stay that includes day trips to Plitvice, Samobor, Trakošćan, Varaždin, or a cross-border drive to Ljubljana or Budapest, a 3-day Avax rental beats ride-shares plus tours on both cost and flexibility. Your hotel porter will often confirm the same.
Are winter tyres and equipment included?
Yes. From 15 November to 15 April all Avax Zagreb rentals include compliant winter tyres and an emergency kit at no extra charge. This is a legal requirement on Croatian inland motorway routes (A1 to Plitvice/Split, A3 east, A2 to Slovenia) when signs are posted, and competitors commonly add €5–10 per day for the same equipment.
How do I drive from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes?
Plitvice is 130 km / 1h 35 min south via the A1 motorway. Take the A1 south and exit at Karlovac, then the D1 through Slunj to the park. Toll ~€5. Arrive before 10:00 to beat coach tours. Entrance 1 is best for Veliki Slap waterfall; Entrance 2 is closer to the Upper Lakes and boat ride.
Can I drive to Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, or Bosnia from Zagreb?
Yes — Zagreb is the best cross-border base in Croatia. Ljubljana 2 h (Bregana border), Graz 2h 30 min (via Slovenia or A4 north), Budapest 3h 30 min (Goričan/Letenye border), Vienna 4h 30 min, Sarajevo 4 h (Stara Gradiška border). Cross-border is FREE for rentals of 3 days or more — select "Cross Border" in Step 4 of booking.
Where should I park near Zagreb Old Town (Gornji Grad)?
Gornji Grad is largely pedestrian. The best paid garages are Importanne Centar (under Glavni Kolodvor), Kaptol Centar, Petrinjska, or Gorica near Cvjetni Trg. Rates €1–2/hour with daily caps. Avoid Zone 1 street parking for visits longer than 2 hours — enforcement is strict and fines (€26–40) are forwarded to rental-car drivers.
How do Zagreb's parking zones work?
Four zones by colour: Zone 1 (red, ~€2/h, 2h max — central), Zone 2 (yellow, ~€1.50/h, 3h max), Zone 3 (green, ~€0.80/h), Zone 4 (marked, weekdays only). Pay via mParking SMS (text the registration plate to the zone's number), ticket machines, or the AZM app. Residential blue zones require a permit — do not park there.
What one-way routes are popular from Zagreb Center?
Summer one-ways to the coast dominate: Zagreb → Split ~€60 fee (390 km / 4 h), Zagreb → Zadar ~€50 (285 km / 2h 55 min), Zagreb → Dubrovnik ~€100 (590 km / 6h 15 min), Zagreb → Zagreb Airport (17 km, usually no fee). Winter tends toward Ljubljana and Budapest cross-border rentals. Select drop-off in Step 1 of booking to see the exact fee.
What are the best day trips from Zagreb by rental car?
Inside 2 hours: Plitvice Lakes (1h 35 min, UNESCO), Samobor (30 min, castle + kremšnita), Trakošćan Castle (1h 15 min, fairytale hilltop), Varaždin (1h 10 min, baroque capital), Krapina Neanderthal Museum (55 min), Sljeme gondola (30 min), Ljubljana cross-border (2 h). Zagorje and Međimurje wine regions are tiny and friendly — a brilliant alternative to the coast.
Is there an Avax drop-off at Zagreb Airport?
Yes — our Zagreb Airport desk (ZAG) is 17 km from the downtown office. Drop-off between the two is typically no fee on most rate plans. Ideal for a fly-out itinerary where you've explored Zagreb by rental and need to reach the airport without a taxi.
Where is the Zagreb Downtown office?
Our office is located at Ulica Kralja Zvonimira 37, in the eastern city centre near Kvaternikov Trg. We are open 08:00–20:00 and our staff is always on-site to assist you. Walk in any time during opening hours — no appointment needed.
Is winter equipment included in the rental?
Yes! All rentals from our Zagreb office include mandatory winter tires and equipment at no extra cost during the winter period (November 15 – April 15). This is a legal requirement in continental Croatia, and many competitors charge €5–€10/day extra for it.

The service is excellent, just like at their office in Dubrovnik, where we picked up the vehicle. The only thing we didn't like was that they don't have a designated return location. They asked us to find parking near the AVAX office, and it's a difficult area to park in.
But aside from that minor detail... everything was excellent. I imagine it would be easier to return the vehicle to their airport offices.

Brilliant. Easy booking process, lots of additions at little to no extra cost and great insurance policy options too - didn’t have to have a deposit tied up for weeks with the option we chose. Communication instructions were clear & Avax contacts in pickup and dropoff locations (Split & Zagreb) were friendly and proactive. Car was as described and in good driving condition and inbuilt gps handy. Would definitely use them again when next in Croatia! Thank you 😃

Best Time to Book
Car rental prices in Croatia vary by season. Plan ahead for the best rates.
Our Zagreb Center office is located at Ulica Kralja Zvonimira 37, in the eastern city centre near Kvaternikov Trg (Kvatrić) — a 15-minute walk or one tram stop from Glavni Kolodvor (Zagreb Main Train Station) and the main bus station. The office is open 08:00–20:00 daily and staffed on-site, so walk-ins during opening hours are welcome — no appointment needed. Ideal for travellers arriving by train or bus, city-centre hotel guests, and anyone starting a drive to Plitvice, the Dalmatian coast, or cross-border to Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, or Bosnia.
Zagreb is Croatia's capital and largest city — a compact, walkable mix of Austro-Hungarian Upper Town (Gornji Grad), lively Lower Town cafés, and one of Central Europe's best museum scenes (Museum of Broken Relationships, Mimara, Naïve Art). The funicular to Gornji Grad, the colourful tiled roof of St. Mark's Church, and the daily noon cannon from Lotrščak Tower are essentials. From October through April, Advent in Zagreb transforms the city into one of Europe's top-rated Christmas markets.
A rental car from our Zagreb Downtown office unlocks continental Croatia and four neighbouring countries inside 2 hours: Plitvice Lakes (130 km / 1h 35 min), Samobor (25 km / 30 min, famous kremšnita cream cake), Trakošćan Castle (90 km / 1h 15 min, fairytale hilltop fortress), Varaždin (90 km / 1h 10 min, baroque capital), Krapina Neanderthal Museum (55 km / 55 min), Sljeme/Mt Medvednica gondola (15 km / 30 min), Ljubljana (170 km / 2 h cross-border), and Budapest (345 km / 3h 30 min cross-border). Summer one-ways to Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik are among our most popular routes.
Best Alternative to Taxi, Uber & Bolt in Zagreb
Both Uber and Bolt operate in Zagreb with competitive fares, so a quick Old Town transfer or ride across the Sava is cheap. However, for any multi-day stay with day trips to Plitvice, Samobor, Trakošćan, or across a border to Ljubljana or Budapest, renting from our Zvonimira 37 office is dramatically cheaper than stringing together ride-shares and organised tours. A 3-day Avax rental includes unlimited kilometres, full insurance, compliant winter tyres (Nov 15 – Apr 15), and free cross-border paperwork — typically less than two half-day bus tours.
Winter Rentals in Zagreb — Tyres & Equipment Included
Zagreb sits in continental Croatia where snow, fog, and sub-zero temperatures are common from November through March. All Avax Zagreb rentals include compliant winter tyres and an emergency kit at no extra charge from 15 November to 15 April — a legal requirement on inland motorway routes and a common surcharge point at competitors (€5–10/day). If you're driving to Plitvice in January, crossing to Ljubljana in a snowstorm, or heading to Sljeme to ski, this matters.
Nearby Attractions
Zagreb Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
The historic core of Zagreb with St. Mark's Church (colourful tiled roof), Stone Gate, Lotrščak Tower (noon cannon), and Croatian Parliament. Reach the funicular in 5 minutes from Ban Jelačić Square. A pedestrian zone — park at Importanne or Kaptol Centar garages.
1.5 km
Ban Jelačić Square & Dolac Market
The main square at the heart of Zagreb and the open-air Dolac farmers' market just above. Daily morning market has the best seasonal produce, cheese, and pastries in town. Most walking tours start here.
2 km
Sljeme / Mt Medvednica Gondola
A 4 km gondola opened 2022 climbs to the 1,035 m summit of Sljeme — hiking, the medieval Medvedgrad fortress, ski lifts in winter, and views over all of Zagreb. Parking at Dolje base station.
15 km
Samobor
A charming half-day trip 30 minutes west of Zagreb. Medieval castle ruins, the famous Samoborska kremšnita cream cake, and access to Žumberak Nature Park. Also the gateway to the Plešivica wine region.
25 km
Krapina Neanderthal Museum
One of the world's best Neanderthal museums, built into the hillside where 80+ Neanderthal skeletons were found. Brilliant for families. Often combined with nearby Kumrovec ethno-village (Tito's birthplace).
55 km
Trakošćan Castle
Croatia's most photogenic fairytale castle — a 13th-century hilltop fortress rebuilt in neo-Gothic style with a moat-lake and forested grounds. The single best interior-visit castle in the country. Often combined with Varaždin.
90 km
Varaždin (baroque capital)
Croatia's baroque jewel, 1h 10 min north. Perfectly preserved Old Town fortress (Stari Grad), elegant 18th-century palaces, and the Špancirfest street festival every August.
90 km
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia's most famous national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — 16 terraced turquoise lakes and 92 waterfalls. 1h 35 min south via the A1 motorway. Arrive before 10:00 to beat coach-tour crowds. Open year-round; winter visits with frozen waterfalls are spectacular.
130 km
Driving Tips
Zagreb has a dense tram network — trams always have right of way and crossing tram tracks at speed can damage tyres. Drive calmly in the Lower Town grid and watch for trams on Zvonimirova, Branimirova, and Ilica. Paid parking zones are colour-coded: Zone 1 (red, ~€2/h, 2h max, strictly enforced), Zone 2 (yellow), Zone 3 (green), Zone 4 (weekdays only). Pay via mParking SMS, ticket machines, or the AZM app. For Old Town visits, use Importanne Centar, Kaptol Centar, or Petrinjska garages — avoid Zone 1 street parking unless you need <2 hours. The A1 south (Plitvice, Split), A3 east (Slavonia, Serbia), and A2 north (Slovenia) all exit within 10 minutes of our office via Slavonska avenija. Winter tyres are legally required 15 Nov – 15 Apr on inland motorway routes when signs are posted — all our rentals include them.
Our Zagreb office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Gornji Grad, Donji Grad, Maksimir, Trnje, Trešnjevka, Črnomerec, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
