Your Guide to Renting a Car at Zagreb Airport
Written by Eugen, Avax Rent a Car
Franjo Tudman Airport (ZAG) is Croatia's largest and busiest airport, serving the capital city of Zagreb. The modern terminal, which opened in 2017, handles over three million passengers per year with connections to destinations across Europe and beyond. It is located approximately 15 km southeast of Zagreb city centre in the Velika Gorica area.
The new terminal building is spacious and well-organized, with arrivals on the ground floor. Our Avax meet-and-greet officer will contact you via WhatsApp once you land and meet you directly inside the terminal. From the airport, Zagreb's main square (Ban Jelacic Square) is a quick 20-minute drive via the D30 road or the A11 motorway.
Zagreb Airport is an excellent starting point for exploring continental Croatia and beyond. The A1 motorway connects Zagreb to Split (4 hours) and passes near Plitvice Lakes National Park (2 hours). Heading east, Slavonia and the Baranja wine region are 3 hours away. For a shorter day trip, the hilltop castle town of Samobor is just 30 minutes from the airport and famous for its kremsnita cream cake.
Nearby Attractions
Zagreb Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
The historic heart of Zagreb featuring St. Mark's Church with its colourful tiled roof, the Stone Gate, Lotrscak Tower (which fires a cannon daily at noon), and the Croatian Parliament building.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia's most famous national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A system of 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls set within a dense beech and fir forest. Absolutely unmissable.
Samobor
A charming small town nestled at the foot of the Samobor Hills, known for its traditional kremsnita cream cake, medieval castle ruins, and as a starting point for hiking in the Zumberak Nature Park.
Varazdin
The baroque capital of Croatia, featuring a beautifully preserved Old Town fortress, elegant 18th-century palaces, and the famous Spancirfest street festival held every August.
Driving Tips
Zagreb has a well-connected motorway network. The A1 heads south to Split and Dubrovnik, the A3 runs east-west connecting to Slovenia and Serbia, and the A2 leads north to the Slovenian border. All Croatian motorways use a ticket-based toll system: take a ticket at the entrance and pay at the exit. In Zagreb city centre, paid parking zones are marked by colours (Zone 1 red, Zone 2 yellow, Zone 3 green) with rates decreasing as you move from the centre. Pay via parking meters or the mParking SMS system.
