Twenty minutes north of Split, a medieval fortress crowns a limestone crag — Klis. It guarded the mountain pass for two millennia, doubled as Meereen in Game of Thrones, and today rewards visitors with some of the finest panoramic views in Dalmatia.
Visitor essentials
Open daily 09:00–19:00 in summer (shorter off-season). Entry ~8 EUR. Free parking below the entrance. Wear closed shoes — the stone paths get slippery when wet. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full visit.

D1 via Solin (Roman Salona)
Head north from Split on the D1 through Solin — Roman capital of Dalmatia — then climb the switchbacks up to Klis. This is the classic historic route and lets you combine Salona ruins with the fortress in one loop.

10 min from SplitThe ancient capital of Roman Dalmatia lies right on the way. Wander the ruins of the amphitheatre, the early Christian basilica, and the forum — birthplace of Emperor Diocletian.
Klis Fortress
The main eventA medieval stone fortress crowning a limestone crag above the mountain pass. Explore three defensive terraces, the Ottoman-era mosque converted to a chapel, and cannons still pointing toward Split.
Game of Thrones "Meereen"
Seasons 4 & 5Stand where Daenerys Targaryen freed the slaves of Meereen and where the Great Masters were crucified. Look for the interpretation panels at the eastern terrace showing scenes as they were filmed.
Panoramic Adriatic Views
From the wallsFrom the highest bastion the view stretches across Split, Kaštela Bay, and out to Šolta, Brač, and Čiovo. On clear days you can see all the way to Vis. Best at sunset.
Klis Spit-Roasted Lamb
In the villageKlis village is the Dalmatian capital of "janjetina s ražnja" — whole lamb slowly turned over open fire. A dozen roadside tavernas serve it daily. Perfect way to end the fortress visit.
Parking at Klis Fortress
Free parking is easy to find — here are the three main options.
Megdan (east) lot
Free open-air lot directly below the fortress entrance. 5-minute uphill walk to the ticket booth. First choice for most visitors.
West-side lot
Second free lot on the Split-facing side. Longer walk but often has space when Megdan is full. Great sunset views right from the car.
Klis village lots
Park along the main road in Klis village if you plan to have lunch at a lamb-roast konoba. Most tavernas have their own free parking for guests.
