Your Guide to Renting a Car at Dubrovnik Airport
Written by Bojan, Avax Rent a Car
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), also known as Cilipi Airport, is the main gateway to southern Dalmatia and one of Croatia's busiest airports during the summer season. Located approximately 20 km southeast of Dubrovnik's Old Town near the village of Cilipi, the airport handles over two million passengers annually with direct flights from major European cities.
The airport has a single modern terminal with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the upper level. Unlike most rental brands at DBV, Avax operates a dedicated walk-up office 150 metres from the arrivals exit — straight across the road, about a 2-minute walk. There are no shuttle buses and no off-site lots: you collect your car at our Dobrota 24 office in Čilipi and drive straight onto the D8 coastal road. Dubrovnik's Old Town is around 25 minutes away, with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the Elafiti Islands.
Heading north from the airport, the scenic coastal highway connects you to Cavtat in just 5 minutes, or you can drive towards Montenegro (the border crossing at Debeli Brijeg is only 30 minutes away). If you plan to visit the Peljesac Peninsula and its famous vineyards, take the new Peljesac Bridge which bypasses the short stretch of Bosnian territory at Neum, making the drive seamless and toll-free.
Nearby Attractions
Dubrovnik Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval stone walls, the Stradun promenade, and baroque architecture. Walk the full 2 km circuit of the city walls for unforgettable views.
Cavtat
A charming harbour town on the Rat Peninsula with a beautiful waterfront promenade, the Vlaho Bukovac Gallery, and excellent seafood restaurants. A perfect first stop after landing.
Konavle Valley
A lush green valley stretching from the airport to the Montenegro border, known for traditional silk embroidery, wine cellars, horseback riding, and the Sokol Grad medieval fortress.
Peljesac Peninsula
Croatia's premier wine region, home to Dingac and Postup red wines. Visit Ston for its ancient salt pans and the longest fortress wall in Europe after the Great Wall of China.
Driving Tips
The D8 coastal road between the airport and Dubrovnik Old Town can be congested during peak summer months (July-August), especially between 10 AM and 1 PM. Consider travelling early morning or late afternoon. Parking in Dubrovnik is limited and expensive; use the large public car park at Ilija above the Old Town or the underground garage at Gruz port.
Our Dubrovnik office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Lapad, Gruž, Pile, Ploče, Babin Kuk, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
