In Roman times, Solin was known as Salonae — the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities in the entire Roman Empire, with a population that once exceeded 60,000 people. Today, the extensive ruins of ancient Salona are among Croatia's most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage candidate.
