Yes, renting without a credit card is possible at Avax Rent a Car, but it applies only to smaller car groups (Mini, Economy, and Intermediate). Availability depends on your pick-up and return location as well as the rental period. You will need to select our Premium insurance package and pay a one-time no-credit-card fee of €60. If you have a credit card, no extra fee applies regardless of the car category.

Is a deposit required for car rental in Croatia?

The deposit amount depends on your chosen insurance package. With Start (basic) insurance, the deposit ranges from €750 to €2,500 depending on the car category. With Medium insurance, the deposit drops to €250–€900. With our Premium insurance, no deposit is required at all — this is Avax’s most popular option. The deposit is a temporary pre-authorisation on your credit or debit card, not a charge, and is automatically released within 5–14 business days after you return the car.

What is the minimum age for car rental in Croatia?

The minimum age to rent a car with Avax is 18 years, and you must hold a valid driving licence for at least one year. The authorised driver must be at least 22 years old. Drivers aged 18 to 21 can still rent but a Young Driver Fee of €10 per day applies, up to a maximum of €87.50 per rental.

Is cross-border travel allowed with a rental car in Croatia?

Yes, cross-border travel is permitted with Avax rental cars. You can drive to Montenegro (popular for day trips to Kotor and Budva), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mostar is a 2.5-hour drive from Dubrovnik), Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Austria, and Italy. For rentals of 3 days or more, cross-border travel to Montenegro and Bosnia is included free of charge. For shorter rentals, a cross-border permit fee of €30–€50 applies. You must notify us at the time of booking so we can prepare the green card international motor insurance certificate.

What is the fuel policy at Avax Rent a Car?

Avax operates a full-to-full fuel policy. You receive the car with a full tank of fuel and return it with a full tank. You only pay for the fuel you actually use during your rental. If you return the car without refuelling, a refuelling service charge applies (typically €2.50–€3.00 per litre, above pump price). Diesel and petrol are widely available throughout Croatia; average fuel prices in 2026 are approximately €1.45–€1.55 per litre.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Croatia?

To rent a car in Croatia with Avax, you need three documents: a valid driving licence held for at least one year (EU/EEA licences are accepted directly), a valid passport or national ID card, and a credit or debit card in the main driver’s name. Non-EU licences in non-Latin script (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean) require an International Driving Permit. What is the cancellation policy at Avax Rent a Car?

You can cancel your reservation free of charge up to 48 hours before the scheduled pick-up time and receive a full refund to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before pickup may be subject to a cancellation fee of up to one day’s rental cost. No-shows are charged the full prepaid amount.
