Before renting a car in Croatia, it's important to familiarise yourself with the local road rules and driving regulations. Driving in Croatia follows rules similar to those in many other European countries.
1. Drive on the Right
Like most European countries, driving in Croatia is on the right-hand side of the road. Overtaking is done on the left.
2. Speed Limits
Speed limits in Croatia vary depending on the type of road:
- Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
- Outside urban areas: 80–90 km/h (49–56 mph)
- Expressways: 110 km/h (68 mph)
- Highways: 130 km/h (81 mph)
3. Seatbelts
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers in the vehicle, both in the front and rear seats.
4. Child Restraints
Children under 12 years of age or shorter than 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) must use appropriate child restraints. Avax offers child seats and booster seats as optional extras during booking.
5. Alcohol and Mobile Phone Laws
The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.05%. Novice drivers and professional drivers face zero tolerance. In the event of an accident, zero-tolerance rules apply to all drivers.
Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal. Hands-free devices are permitted.
6. Roundabouts and Overtaking
Vehicles already in the roundabout have the right of way. Overtaking is prohibited near intersections, pedestrian crossings, and hills.
7. Headlights and Winter Equipment
Headlights must be on at all times from November 15th to April 15th, even during daylight hours. During this period, vehicles must also have winter tyres or carry snow chains when driving in designated areas.
8. Tolls
Many highways and major roads in Croatia are toll roads. Payment can be made by cash, credit/debit card, or electronic toll collection (ENC) devices.
9. Documentation and Emergencies
Always carry your driver's licence and identification while driving. In case of an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.
