Your Guide to Renting a Car in Trogir
Trogir is one of the most remarkably preserved medieval towns in Europe — a small island city connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and to the island of Čiovo by another, its entire Old Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Greek settlers in the 3rd century BC as Tragurion, the town passed through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and eventually Croatian hands, accumulating extraordinary architecture at every stage.
Our Avax meet-and-greet service in Trogir brings your rental car directly to your accommodation or a convenient meeting point in the town. Trogir is just 5 km west of Split Airport, making it an ideal first stop after arrival — you can collect the car and immediately begin exploring without the need to drive into busy Split. The town itself is best explored on foot, but a rental car is essential for discovering the surrounding Dalmatian coast and islands.
From Trogir, the entire Dalmatian coast is within easy reach: Split city centre is 27 km east (30 minutes), the seven historic Kaštela towns line the bay between Trogir and Split, and the island of Čiovo (connected by bridge) has quieter beaches and excellent seafood restaurants. Further afield, Šibenik and Krka National Park are 75 km north, while the Cetina canyon and Omiš are 60 km south.
Nearby Attractions
Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Trogir)
The jewel of Trogir's Old Town: a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral featuring the magnificent Radovan portal (1240 AD) — one of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia. The bell tower can be climbed for views over the town and bay.
Kamerlengo Fortress
A 15th-century Venetian fortress at the western tip of the island, featuring a circular tower and impressive views of the Trogir channel and Čiovo island. Hosts open-air cinema screenings in summer.
Čiovo Island
Connected to Trogir by a bridge, Čiovo has a quieter character than its famous neighbour. The village of Slatine has a 15th-century Franciscan monastery, clear water beaches, and excellent family-run restaurants serving fresh fish.
Split Airport
One of Croatia's two main international airports, just 5 km east of Trogir. If you are picking up a car and want to avoid the airport crowds, meeting our officer in Trogir is a convenient alternative for guests staying in the area.
Driving Tips
Trogir Old Town is pedestrianised, and the main island town has no through traffic. Use the large car park outside the town walls (before the bridge from the mainland) or the parking areas on Čiovo island (connected by the southern Trogir bridge). Note that the bridge from the mainland to the Old Town is one-way and regulated by traffic lights. In summer, parking near the Old Town is almost always full by 10 AM — arrive early or use the paid parking on the Čiovo side.
