Your Guide to Renting a Car at Split Airport
Split Airport (SPU), situated near the town of Kastela between Split and Trogir, is the second busiest airport in Croatia and the primary hub for exploring central Dalmatia. With direct connections to over 40 European cities during summer, it welcomes millions of visitors annually who come to experience the Dalmatian coast, islands, and hinterland.
The airport has one passenger terminal with a straightforward layout. After clearing arrivals, our Avax representative will meet you near the car rental area and drive you to our nearby office, just a 2-minute ride from the terminal. From the airport, Split city centre is approximately 25 km to the east, while the UNESCO-listed town of Trogir is only 5 km to the west.
Split Airport is ideally positioned as a starting point for road trips along the Adriatic coast. Head north to Sibenik and the Krka National Park waterfalls (90 minutes), or south towards the charming town of Omis and the Cetina River canyon (40 minutes). The airport is also the closest point to reach the islands of Brac, Hvar, and Vis via the Split ferry port.
Best Alternative to Taxi & Uber at Split Airport
A taxi from Split Airport to the city centre typically costs between 40 and 60 EUR one way, and Uber operates only in limited areas outside the city, making it unreliable for airport transfers. Renting a car with Avax from the very first moment you land turns that single taxi fare into days of complete freedom. On a 3-day rental you get unlimited kilometres, full insurance, and free cross-border travel to Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro — for a total price that is often less than two taxi rides. No waiting in queues, no surge pricing, no dependency on shuttle schedules.
Nearby Attractions
Diocletian's Palace, Split
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world, built by Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century. The palace basement, Peristyle square, and Cathedral of St. Domnius are must-sees.
Trogir Old Town
A UNESCO-listed medieval island town connected to the mainland by a stone bridge, featuring the stunning Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its Radovan portal, and a maze of narrow Romanesque and Renaissance streets.
Krka National Park
A breathtaking national park centred on the Krka River and its series of seven travertine waterfalls, including the famous Skradinski Buk. Swimming is allowed at the base of the falls during summer months.
Klis Fortress
A dramatic medieval hilltop fortress perched above Split, famous as a filming location for Game of Thrones (the city of Meereen). The fortress offers panoramic views stretching from the mountains to the sea.
Driving Tips
The D8 coastal road between Split and Trogir passes directly by the airport and is heavily trafficked during summer. For longer journeys north or south, use the A1 motorway which is faster and less congested. Toll payments can be made with cash or credit card at motorway booths. In Split city centre, use the Sukoisan or Znjan parking areas near the beaches rather than trying to find street parking near Diocletian's Palace.
