Plitvice Lakes is closer to Zadar than to Zagreb. A rental car lets you leave before 07:30, beat the coach-tour wave, and be back in Zadar for dinner at the Sea Organ.
Most guides assume Zagreb or Split — but the numbers tell a different story. Plitvice is 125 km from Zadar, 140 km from Zagreb, and 240 km from Split. From Zadar, the drive is almost entirely on the modern A1 motorway, through the 6 km Sveti Rok tunnel and out into the Lika plateau.
The trade-off: Zadar is a small, walkable coastal city with a 3,000-year-old old town, a ferry port connecting seven islands, and Zadar Airport (ZAD) 12 km away. Most travellers fly into ZAD, pick up a car at our airport or downtown desk, and build a 3–5 day itinerary that includes Plitvice, Krka, Pag and Kornati.

The A1 begins with one of Croatia’s most photographed bridges, spanning the Novigrad Sea gorge 200 m above the water. A short layby just before the bridge is a popular photo stop.
A dramatic 6 km tunnel under the Velebit mountain — the engineering feat that connected Dalmatia to continental Croatia in 2003. Emerging on the Lika side the landscape flips from coastal limestone to alpine meadows.
The highland plateau of Lika — Nikola Tesla’s birthplace is here at Smiljan (a 10 min detour). Expect 8–12 °C cooler temperatures than on the Zadar coast; bring a light jacket even in August.
Exit the A1 at Otočac or Karlovac (depending on the exact entrance). Entrance 2 is closer to the Upper Lakes and boat ride; Entrance 1 is closer to the Veliki Slap waterfall. Both have paid parking.
Both entrances have paid parking. Arrive before 09:00 or after 14:00 in July–August for the closest spots.
Closest to Veliki Slap, the 78 m waterfall that appears in every Plitvice photo. Exit the A1 at Karlovac, then 60 km south on the D1. Paid parking ~€7/day, 700 spaces.
Closer from Zadar via the Otočac exit. Access to the electric boat ride across Kozjak Lake and the Upper Lakes boardwalks. Paid parking ~€7/day, slightly larger, usually less crowded than Entrance 1 in summer.
For couples and families of 3+, a rental car is usually cheaper and always more flexible.

Organised tours rush you through in 4 hours. With your own car, you can spend 6–8 hours in the park, return after dusk, or stop at Rastoke village on the way back.
Add Rastoke (15 min), Barać Caves (20 min), or Nikola Tesla’s birthplace at Smiljan (10 min off-route) — none of which are possible with a group tour.
Between November and April, snow is common around Plitvice. All Avax Zadar rentals include compliant winter tyres at no extra charge during that period.
A Plitvice day tour from Zadar costs €70–95 per person. A rental car for the day plus park entry often undercuts two bus tickets — and the car is yours for the rest of the trip.
