Founded by Greek settlers in the 3rd century BC as Tragurion, the town passed through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and eventually Croatian hands, accumulating extraordinary architecture at every stage.

Further afield, Šibenik and Krka National Park are 75 km north, while the Cetina canyon and Omiš are 60 km south.
